Hippo Yawn can be found near Wave Rock. You can either drive to this location or you can walk. We chose to walk – it is a lot more exciting.
The are two trails that lead to Hippo Yawn. One is from the Parking Lot. The other is around Wave Rock itself. Of course, we chose the latter.
The trail sign says that it takes 25 minutes to Hippo Yawn, however we found it was a lot quicker. This included a little detour to the top of a rock area to see the view from a different angle.
The trail is flat. There are quite a few flies during the hotter months, so I suggest you use a fly net. Or, you can keep you mouth closed to avoid eating any flies. [they don’t really taste that good]
Notably, there is a chance you will see snakes. I heard that if you make noise while you walk they will shy away. However, I prefer to watch out for movement.
While walking alongside Wave Rock, you will have the opportunity to see an array of rock dragon lizards. These little critters are cute but can move really fast.
There is a section of Wave Rock which you can walk up. Of course, wearing the right shoes will help because the rocks are slipperty. The view at the top is amazing. We found a wall that was built all along the edge side and according to information, this help reduced water erosion and flooding of the plains below.
Hippo Yawn looks exactly like a Hippo Yawning. After a short walk, the coolness of the cave is refreshing. With rocks placed perfectly in the mouth of the cave, one can enjoy the shade and have a ‘selfie’.
The best place to take photos is on the left side of the cave when you look directly at it. At this point, the formed mounds look like a hippo and the lighting gives a photo great depth.
For those that are a little weary from the walk can take the direct route back to the car park. This route is flat however, does not offer as much shade as the trail around Wave Rock to Hippo Yawn.
Tips for Hippo Yawn:
- Use fly nets to protect your face. Insect spray does not help much.
- Wear a hat and Sunscreen
- Take Water with you.
- Don’t forget the camera
- Enjoy yourself
